Strengthening I CAN South Sudan’s Capacity for Effective Programme Management

On 18–19 August, staff members from I CAN South Sudan participated in a two-day capacity-strengthening workshop held at Yam Hotel and hosted by Danish Church Aid (DCA).

The workshop aimed to enhance staff members’ knowledge and practical skills in project management, concept development, proposal writing, fundraising, and programme implementation. It focused on strengthening the organization’s ability to design and manage effective interventions in livelihoods, education, water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH), nutrition, and health.

Building stronger programmes

Participants explored essential aspects of programme cycle management, from identifying community needs and analysing the operating context to designing, implementing, monitoring, and evaluating projects.

The workshop also strengthened participants’ ability to develop clear project concepts and results-based proposals. Staff learned how to connect identified needs with appropriate activities, measurable results, realistic budgets, and sustainable outcomes.

Special attention was given to ensuring that proposed interventions uphold people’s right to livelihoods and respond meaningfully to the priorities of affected communities.

Strengthening fundraising and donor readiness

Developing an effective fundraising strategy was another important part of the training. Participants examined how I CAN South Sudan can identify funding opportunities, communicate its programme priorities, and build strong relationships with donors and partners.

The sessions highlighted the importance of developing proposals that are evidence-based, responsive to community needs, and aligned with donor requirements. Participants also reflected on the need for accountability, compliance, transparency, and effective reporting throughout the programme cycle.

Turning knowledge into action

The workshop provided an important opportunity for staff members to exchange experiences, strengthen teamwork, and develop practical approaches that can be applied across ICAN South Sudan’s programmes.

The knowledge and skills gained will support the organization in designing stronger projects, mobilizing resources, and managing programmes that deliver sustainable results. They will also help ensure that interventions meet donor expectations while protecting dignity, promoting accountability, and advancing the right to sustainable livelihoods.

I CAN South Sudan appreciates Danish Church Aid for hosting and facilitating this valuable capacity-strengthening initiative. The organization remains committed to investing in its staff and improving the quality, relevance, and sustainability of its programmes for the communities it serves.
