Women’s Economic Empowerment through Start-up Grants in Gorom Refugee Settlement in South Sudan

On 24 July 2026, I CAN South Sudan successfully supported women’s economic empowerment by providing start-up business grants in the form of essential business items to vulnerable single mothers and women’s economic groups in Gorom Refugee Settlement

The support is intended to help the women establish and expand small businesses, including restaurants, retail shops, salons, tea stalls, and second-hand clothing businesses. These enterprises will enable them to generate sustainable income, improve household resilience, and provide for their families with dignity.

This initiative reflects our commitment to promoting sustainable livelihoods and strengthening the economic resilience of refugee women and their families. By investing in women-led businesses, we are creating opportunities for women to become financially independent, support their children’s education, and contribute to the wellbeing of their communities.

The distribution was marked by smiles, tears of joy, heartfelt prayers, and overwhelming gratitude. One beneficiary expressed her emotions by saying:

“This is the first time anyone has believed in us.”

Her words captured the significance of the initiative. Beyond providing business items, we are restoring hope, affirming dignity, and creating opportunities for women to rebuild their lives through self-reliance.

At I CAN South Sudan, we firmly believe that empowering women creates a ripple effect throughout society. When women are economically empowered, families become more secure, children are more likely to attend school, local economies grow, and communities become stronger and more resilient.

Together, we are building pathways to dignity, economic independence, and lasting change for refugee communities.

We extend our sincere appreciation to Global Well Being Fund and our partner Cohere and supporters who continue to stand with I CAN South Sudan

Henry Wandu Bimo and Apostle Grace Wenepai Enosa. My family fled the war between the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) in Southern Sudan and the Bashir Government of Northern Sudan in 1990 to Mboki Refugee Camp in Central Africa Republic.
