Donate to I CAN South Sudan on Global Giving

Since 2013, over 2 million people have left South Sudan to escape civil war.  Many of these refugees are now living in refugee camps like Bidi-Bidi in Northern Uganda. In these camps, there is no electricity or source of light.  A whole family relies on a single, tiny, dim torch for light after dark, powered by one battery.  Many regularly have to walk long distances in the blazing heat of the day to charge these for use, because individual solar chargers are unaffordably expensive.

This situation has a devastating impact on thousands of vulnerable children.  Their education is already suffering as refugee camp schools are overwhelmed, with class sizes of over 100 pupils. The lack of power at night means that they cannot read or do homework, and many bright children are struggling to realise their full potential as a result.

We want to install 10 solar power points across the Bidi-Bidi refugee Settlement Zone 1 and distribute 100 solar lamps to children from different households. These points will allow these vulnerable families who have lost their home and country to have light to read at night and do their home work, charge torches so that families can have light I'm the house at night.  

To do this, we need your help. The project will cost $10,000 to install and we are trying to raise this money between 9th and 27th September.  Every little helps, and no donation is too small to be useful.  If you don’t have any spare money, please consider assisting us by sharing our message on social media.

About I-can

I CAN is a community-based charity established in 2018.  We are registered in both Uganda and South Sudan, and we are recognised by the Office of the Prime Minister and the Protection and Humanitarian Service in Bidi-Bidi.  We have international links to Miserior and we are non-political, non-tribal, non-denominational, non-partisal and non-discriminatory.

Our main charitable objective is to help refugee children in the Bidi-Bidi Refugee Settlement.  Along with raising money for material improvements like solar lighting, we organise social and musical education for unaccompanied refugee children, encouraging them to work together, to express themselves and to learn skills for the future. Some of the performances of these children have been recorded for the purpose of spreading a message of peace and hope for the future.
